ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anthony Bowers is an artist and educator working in Philadelphia. He loves pasta and has three children who are the apple of his eye. Originally from the midwest, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 with an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and in 2007 with a BFA in Painting from Indiana University. Anthony also worked as a studio assistant on many large scale installation projects at the Fabric Workshop and Museum and as a long time curator/member of an artist-run project space, FJORD Gallery.
"In these works I have been thinking of the notebook paper as a reliquary - a reflective surface that is empty enough to make space for projection, familiar enough to approach but resolute enough to hold the objects inside of it. The inner works are paintings but also a sincere mediation on desire, hope or a person that I love. Each piece in this series is a prayer, an invocation, a mediation - with each stroke of paint, I try to hold my intention in mind. They are not spells, I claim no secret knowledge but my hope is that they hold space for others and make some slight but positive ripple in the fabric of the world."
